Food
Aramark Panther Dining manages all food vendors on campus. They have taken many steps toward making the dining experience more sustainable. Some of the initiatives they have started include recycling the old coffee grounds to be used as fertilizer around campus and removing trays to save water. For a complete listing of initiatives download the Panther’s Steps Toward Sustainability document.
FIU Organic Garden
FIU has a small organic garden located on the southwest side of the Nature Preserve. The Agroecology Program and the Garden Club manage the garden. Different fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other plants are grown in the plots according to season. For now, the garden is small and only produces enough to sell at the FIU Organic Farmer’s Market and for the farmers.
FIU Organic Farmer’s Market
Every Wednesday during the Fall and Spring semester is an Organic Farmer’s Market in the center of campus. The Farmer’s Market is put on by the FIU Organic Farmer’s Market Consortium, which is made up of many student groups at FIU. Many local vendors also feature their products at the market each week. Items featured at the market are produce from the FIU Organic Garden, produce from local farms, local organic honey, local organic baked goods, local organic hand made soaps, smoothies, sandwiches, free bike repair shop, food demos, workshops, and many educational tables. Currently the market is set up on Modesto Maidique Campus in the Green Library breezeway from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. If you are a student, student group, or local vendor that is interested in working with the market, email us!
