FIU is working hard to provide many alternative methods of commuting to campus than in a single occupancy vehicle. Check out all the ways you can get to campus below and green your commute!

FIU has partnered with South Florida Commuter Services (SFCS), a program of the Florida Department of Transportation, to provide transportation related programs and services to FIU students, faculty, and staff. Visit Get2FIU.com

Carpool

FIU’s Carpool Program encourages Florida International University members reduce the number of times they drive alone to campus each week. The program even allows members to track their dollar, emission, and fuel savings. It provides a solution that reduces transportation related greenhouse gas emissions and tracks the savings. The program allows users to search for other carpool members by selecting location, and schedules. Users will remain anonymous until users decide to form a group. The FIU Carpool Program also benefits members of the FIU community by providing close parking for carpoolers. In order to use this privileged parking, a carpool decal must be obtained and properly displayed. Go to Get2FIU.com to learn more or to sign up.

RideFlag

rfCarpooling to FIU is now easier than ever with the new Rideflag on demand mobile app.

  • Just enter your destination and get instant carpool matches. It is that easy!
  • You decide who to ride or drive with!
  • And you still can park in the preferred carpool spots.

FIU will automatically provide you with a carpool permit as long as both driver and rider keep their phones on as they entered the campus.Download the RideFlag app on the App Store or Google Play.

Miami Dade Transit

The University offers half price student transit passes for Miami-Dade Transit. Promoting public transportation will ease the commute as the South Florida population continues to grow, and reduce the number of cars on the road. The University is discussing possible future partnership with Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, Miami-Dade Transit Authority, Florida Department of Transportation, The City of Sweetwater, and Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation which would significantly reduce emissions from transportation. Go to Get2FIU.com to see the routes that come to FIU and to use MDT's Trip planner.

Emergency Ride Home Program

The Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program provides commuters in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, and Saint Lucie Counties that carpool, vanpool, ride transit, bike, or walk, three or more days a week with six free taxi cab vouchers a year to use in the event of an unexpected emergency or unscheduled overtime. To register go to Get2FIU.com

Other FIU Transportation Initiatives

FIU Bike Shop

The FIU Bike Shop by Recreation Services opened in Fall 2012. Recreation Services encourages safe and healthy bicycling, and has partnered with other FIU departments to provide the FIU Bike Shop. More than just a repair shop, the FIU Bike Shop can be the central location for "all things "bike" on campus - from providing a central location to learn more about safe biking, to finding out about local rides and events, and directing you to local and national resources on bicycling. The FIU Bike Shop evolved from a student project by Brandt Absolu funded by the FIU Sustainability Committee.

Biking

Many departments on campus are working on promoting and expanding biking on campus. The Office of University Sustainability and the Department of Parking and Transportation are working on painting "sharrows" on the campus roads also. Sharrows are a symbol depicting bicyclists have shared use of a roadway with cars. In areas where the roadway is being expanded, a bike lane will be put in. Portions of Campus Loop Road already have bike lanes installed. Bike Racks for you to lock up your bike are located all around campus including outside garages, housing buildings, and even Outside of the Graham.

FIU Bike Matching

Don’t want to bike to campus alone? No problem, FIU now has a bike matching program through South Florida Commuter Services! Choose your location, schedule, and biking level to be matched with another FIU Biker.

Bikes on the Bay

Available daily during the fall, spring and summer semesters, Bikes on the Bay is a student bike sharing program that provides a fun and easy way to get around campus. This no-charge, no-cost service is available at the Wellness and Recreation Center Membership Desk. Just bring your valid student ID card and you'll be supplied with everything you need, including a helmet, safety vest and bike lock.

cats-shuttle-busShuttle Buses

FIU offers shuttle buses between the three main campuses; the CATS Shuttle and the Golden Panther Express Shuttle. They provide students, faculty, and staff with an alternative to driving, and help lessen the burden of parking on the campuses. Paper tickets are no longer required to ride The Golden Panther Express. Fare will be deducted from your Panther Card debit account when it is swiped on the bus.

Ticket-less Bus System

All the FIU Shuttle buses have now moved to a ticket-less system. All you need to ride is your Panther ID Card. Simply add money to your panther card debit plan and your fare will be automatically deducted.

Paper Reduction

The Department of Parking and Transportation has made huge strides to reduce its amount of paper waste.

  • All parking permits are now virtual so they are associated with a vehicle's license plate.
  • All parking meters on campus have the option to print receipts so visitors do not have to throw away their unwanted parking payment receipts.
  • All parking notifications, citations, and warnings are sent through the email associated with the vehicles.

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date.
