FIU Recycles

FIU Recycles is the overall recycling program for all of FIU's campuses. It incorporates a handful of different recycling initiatives, with our current recycling diversion rate hovering between 25% and 30%. It is managed by FIU Facilities Management, with the FIU Office of University Sustainability handling the outreach and education for the program. Help FIU to reach the state mandated goal of recycling 75% of our waste by 2020 by getting involved!

RecycleMania

RecycleMania is a national recycling competition held every spring semester. Over 450 colleges and universities across the country compete for 8 weeks to see who can recycle the most and reduce the amount of waste they produce. FIU competes in both RecycleMania Competitive Divisions; Grand Champion and Per Capita Classic as well as reports our total recycling weight.

In 2017, FIU took first place in Florida, recycling the most weight of any other Florida university.

Specialized Recycling Streams @ FIU

Ink & Toner Cartridges: Look for the specialized ink cartridge recycling bins around campus. FIU gets a small reimbursement for recycled cartridges which goes back into the program to purchase new recycling bins. Full ink cartridge recycling bins can be scheduled to be picked up by contacting Facilities Management.

Recycle Houses

recycle house
We are proud to partner with Graham Center and Housing Facilities to bring you another way to recycle! These one-of-a-kind recycling bins collect special items that cannot be recycled in traditional recycling bins around campus. Each Recycle House currently collects small electronics and batteries, plastic bags, and food donations. All food collected will be donated to FIU Food Pantry and collected recyclable items will be properly recycled. The structure itself is a uniquely designed Max-R bin and is made of 885 reclaimed milk jugs.
FIU's Recycle Houses are currently located on the first floor lobbies of each residence hall, in Graham Center near the information desk, and in Panther Parking Garage near the electric vehicle charging stations.
What would you like to see recycled in the Recycle Houses? Let us know!

How to get involved with Recycling at FIU

  1. Be informed! Know what items are accepted in FIU's single stream recycling program
  2. Teach others! The best knowledge is shared knowledge. Teach your friends and coworkers about recycling.
  3. Be active! Participate at events or volunteer with the FIU GoGreen Team to spread the word about recycling.

gggGive & GoGreen

Give & GoGreen is a waste reduction and charity donation program. It keeps items out of the landfill and puts them to good use in the local community. Items are collected during the week of move-out in the residence halls and are donated to local charities. During move-out in 2015 over 17,000 pounds of clothes, household items, and furniture was donated to Miami Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity, and Goodwill. Housing also collects non-perishable food items that are donated to the FIU Food Pantry which is available to all enrolled students. Thank you to the Housing Facilities staff who made this year a huge success!

FIU Game Day Recycling

During home football games, Aramark handles recycling for tailgating. Recycle bins are placed at the entrances of the stadium and in the official FIU tailgate village. Fans who choose to tailgate in Tamiami park are given clear recycling bags where they can 'Bag it, Tie it, Leave it' and we will pick it up. Each year the program is expanded by adding more recycling bins and the program will soon be expanded to inside the stadium. So, remember Panther Fans, when you come to cheer on our football team, make sure you recycle too!

Event Recycling

The FIU Recycles Program also provides recycling for special events on campus. Past events include American Heart Walk 2011 & 2012, TEDx, SPC UpRoar Concert, and the FIU BBC Triathlon. If your office or organization is hosting an event on campus an would like to have recycling, please call or email us at least 3 weeks in advance.
